Monash University - Mildura Regional Clinical School
(offering Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgey)
In 2001 the Federal Government provided funding to nine Universities with Medical Schools to set up Clinical Schools in rural Australia.
The purpose of the regional clinical schools is to provide rural exposure to students early in their clinical years, with the overall aim of attracting new medical graduates back to the rural communities to practice.
Monash University was one of the Universities funded by the Federal Government, and as such the Monash University School of Rural Health established the Mildura Region Clinical School (MRCS), located adjacent to the Mildura Base Hospital on Thirteenth Street.
The MRCS receives students in years 2-5 of the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) course each year.
Year 3 students spend 12 months in Mildura, Years 4 spend 6 months and Years 5 spend 6 weeks or more.
Several of the MRCS graduates have already returned to work as medical practitioners in Mildura as a result of this exposure.
Facilities at the MRCS consist of tutorial and meeting rooms, academic and administrative offices, clinical teaching consulting rooms and a state-of-the art, high fidelity simulation and skills laboratory. The School also has advanced videoconferencing and other Information Technology equipment. A separate on-site building provides residential accommodation for 10 students, and MRCS also leases residential properties within Mildura for student accommodation.
Student numbers are continuing to increase at MRCS with the introduction of additional elective topics for students in Anaesthetics, cardiology and Indigenous Health, and there are plans for expansion of the Simulation and Skills Laboratory in 2013.
