The Mildura Region’s Mediterranean-like climate
and soils are ideal for consistent production of
high quality olives. While many horticulturists
may have had a small number of olive trees on
their properties in the past, it has only been in
recent years that large scale commercial
planting has occurred. This development has
been fuelled by increasing demand—in Australia
and in many other parts of the world—with the
growing popularity of Mediterranean cuisine and
greater awareness of the dietary attributes of
olive oil. Australia has an annual trade deficit for
this commodity of around 25,000 tonnes.*
